Many Hudson restaurants took center stage on Warren Street this past Saturday during the 6th Annual “Taste of Hudson” event presented by BeLo3rd and sponsored by The Barlow.  This event showcases the wide range of culinary styles and offerings available in town, and this year was no exception.  Indian, Caribbean, Italian, and Japanese were just a few of many cuisines the Hudson restaurants had on offer.  Taste of Hudson draws both local residents and out of town visitors and this year the turnout was fantastic.

What makes Taste of Hudson so much fun (and such a great value) is that each “taste” only cost $3 on average.  Participants buy tickets when they arrive, with each ticket costing $1.  Then it’s just a matter of deciding “what you’re in the mood for”.  The portion sizes are perfect, allowing participants to try everything.  Run out of tickets?  Just go back and get more!  Start with pizza, then try some sushi, and then some Indian Chicken tikka massala.  How about some gnocchi with roasted eggplant followed by some Caribbean jerk chicken?  Don’t worry, those folks with a sweet tooth aren’t left out – treats were available from several local shops and bakers including scrumptious homebaked cookies, indulgent gourmet cakes, and decadent chocolate brownies.  Of course most of the Hudson restaurants also had non-alcoholic beverages available to wash everything down.

Speaking of non-alcoholic beverages, one table featured one of Hudson’s newest small business: The Hudson Standard.

The idea for The Hudson Standard came to us when a few friends started talking about the handcrafted bitters trend on the west coast. By 2012, we were exploring making bitters here in the Hudson Valley. At the same time, we got really excited about shrubs– syrups made from fruit, vinegar and sweetener. Shrubs make for a creative and versatile cocktail mixer and are equally adept as a stand alone non-alcoholic cocktail, added to seltzer. We call it an “adult” soda because it is both tart and sweet, pretty complex. – The Hudson Standard website

The tasting for THS featured two of their products – Strawberry Rhubarb Shrub with seltzer and Apple Coriander Maple Shrub with seltzer.  Both were delicious and very refreshing.

The Taste of Hudson event isn’t just about sampling some of the many Hudson restaurant and catering creations.  It’s also an opportunity to see friends old and new while enjoying beautiful Warren Street on a gorgeous summer day, which also included live music and table seating under a tent for those who wanted to linger and enjoy the afternoon.

With new Hudson restaurants opening seemingly all the time mark your calendar for Saturday, September 12, 2015.

There’s always something going on in the Hudson Valley, and at the heart of it all was 2013 Hudson Valley Bounty Chili Contest.  This event encourages restaurants and residents to submit and entry, and for $5 you are issued a spoon and a bean (literally a white northern bean).  From there you sample all the offerings of each of the over 20 entrants, often having to return to re-sample just to be sure.  Then, using your bean, you vote for your favorite.

One of us chose the vegetarian chili offered by Hudson’s own Privilege Partner Red Dot, the other voted for a delicious lamb chili offered by Local 111 from Philmont.  Local 111 won first runner-up, but we’re not sure how Red Dot fared.

It was a beautiful day at the Henry Hudson Waterfront Park in Hudson.  Lots of sun, nice breeze, great music and delicious food.  Overall a great day and a lot of fun.  Mark your calendars for next year!

The whole “farm to table” movement, where restaurants use locally sourced provisions has become a trend in dining.  So much so that a great deal of eateries these days promote their focus on produce, meat, and cheeses obtained from farmer’s close to the establishment, thereby supporting the local economy and ensuring guests are enjoying the freshest food available.

Helskinki Hudson partnered once again with Holmquest Farms and Greenhouse to produce “Eat the Farm #2” on Thursday, October 10.  The event paired Helsinki Hudson’s incomparable chef Hugh Horner with a bounty of Holmquest’s vegetables, herbs and pork and line caught salmon.  The first “Eat the Farm” was held in July and was such a success it was quickly repeated to make the most of Fall’s harvest.

The menu included an amazing parsnip puree soup, kale and heirloom tomato salad, a fall succotash, and the aforementioned choice of either roasted pork or salmon.  Everything fresh, incredibly delicious and the included unlimited wine pairings only enhanced the experience. The hosts from Holmquest were exceptionally welcoming, sending us on our way with two pints of homemade “Pumpkin I-scream” (in honor of the upcoming festivities).  Can’t wait to dig in to that once the appetite returns.

An overall outstanding evening.  Looking forward to the EtF #3!
